Cataracts In Dogs:
Dog Breeds Known For Cataracts:
Afghan Hound, American Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Boston Terrier, German
Shepard, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever, Miniature
Schnauzer, Old English Sheepdog, Pointer, Poodle, Siberian Husky,
Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Wirehaired Fox Terrier.
Can Cataracts Be Cured With Medication?
No. In some cases, eye drops that enlarge the pupil can allow
some vision past a cloudy lens, but the change within the lens
remains. Spontaneous partial disappearance or resorption of the
cataracts occurs mainly in dogs under 3 years of age.
My Dog Is Getting Cataracts: What Should I Do?
An immediate examination by an eye specialist - before the lens is too
cloudy - will tell you whether the back of the eye (beyond the cloudy
lens) is healthy. It is vital to learn early if surgical removal
of the lens is a good idea later on. There is no point in
removing a diseased lens if the back of the eye is also diseased.
What Is A Cataract?
A cataract in a dog's eye is a cloudy lens, and is seen as a hazy eye
or white pupil. Light cannot get through the lens to reach the
back of the eye. Do not confuse a cataract (white inside the eye) with a blue, cloudy cornea at the front of the eye, or a white scar on the eyeball.
What Cause Cataracts In Dogs?
Any disturbance to the eye which upsets the lens can cause the lens to
become cloudy. A disease in the body i.e. diabetes, inflammation
or disease in the the eye, injury, a blow to the head, and PRA
can all lead to cataracts in dogs. If the bitch has a disease
while pregnant, cataracts can form in her pups while they are in her
womb. Some cataracts are inherited - most, however, are not inherited.

Cataract Surgery For Dogs:
Surgery involves removing the affected lens to allow light to get to
the sight-receptors at the back of the eye. Surgery may be
considered if there is no disease beyond the cataract or elsewhere in
the eye.
