Dog Breed Health Issues: English Bulldog
Back To Main Dog Health Issues By Breed Page
English Bulldog:

This hardy dog is prone to breathing difficulties.  The Bulldog is a drooler. Its head is shorter than that of other dogs, which affects the development of the salivary glands and shortens their passages.  Drooling is noticeable when the dog is excited or wants something.  If drooling is excessive, your veterinarian can take steps to reduce it.  The English Bulldog is one of the least effective watchdogs.
Average Lifespan Of The English Bulldog: 8-10 years.

Mitral Valve Defects:
A defect in the mitral

difficulties breathing, and tire quickly; they may
even faint or collapse.  There is no cure for this
condition, but it can be managed with a special
diet, exercise restrictions, diuretics, and medication.

Underdeveloped Windpipe

Redundant Forehead Skin:
Extra forehead skin is common in this breed and can allow the upper eyelid to droop over the eye - especially when the head is lowered.  Drooping excessive forehead skin can lead to eye disease and blindness.  Breeders of such dogs should be aware that this fashion is undesirable and breed for tighter forehead skin.
